Association football, a simple game. A simple game that keeps getting quite unnecessarily complicated and that is one reason why Jean-Mattéo Bahoya hasn't played any football for Leeds United yet. Although that makes the argument less about whether he should or should not be playing yet and more about which complications are or are not necessary.
Bahoya is watching, waiting and hopefully enjoying Leeds for a few good reasons that include good management. There is a pecking order, and rightly so, because it wouldn't do much good for Dan James' confidence for some 21-year-old to overtake the pecking order just because he — he's what? he's new? There really isn't much to recommend Bahoya into the team right now other than, he's new. Meanwhile, against Newcastle, there was a bite in James' substitute appearance to indicate he feels new pressure on his status. If Bahoya means a better Dan James, that's good too, right?
Anyhow, it's one of Daniel Farke's niceties that he doesn't give appearances out for free anyhow, that it is not anyhow like you win this prize in a lottery and play whatever in the Premier League anyhow. We liked this when Marcelo Bielsa did this, naming Robbie Gotts as a substitute 32 times but only needing him to play just once. For six minutes.
On top of that, Bahoya is not yet a Gottsesque servant of the bench, nor does he come from Harrogate. He's a young player from France who just moved to Leeds from Germany two weeks ago. Is he in a hotel? Does he have a house? Are his parents with him? Does he understand his oven? Does he know where to buy bin liners?
